Television

Mr. Carpenter is a recipient of seven Daytime Emmy Awards and four Directors Guild of America Awards. He has also been a member of the Director’s Guild of America PAC. Based in New York, Mr. Carpenter has directed the Sony/Nickelodeon telenovela Hollywood Heights and the daytime serials General Hospital, One Life to Live, As the World Turns, All My Children and The Guiding Light.

Theatre

Mr. Carpenter is a Tony Award nominee for his production of Starmites! and a Drama Critics’ Circle Award winner for the Roundabout Theatre production of Privates on Parade.  He directed Lady in the Dark for City Center Encores! and the world premiere of Preston Sturges’ A Cup of Coffee at SoHo Rep.  For eight years he was the Artistic Director of the American Stage Festival.  He also served as Associate Artistic Director for the McCarter Theatre, The American Shakespeare Theatre and the Berkshire Theatre Festival.  And while working extensive in LORT theatre, he also served 14 years on the Executive Board of SDC (the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society).

Writing

Mr. Carpenter has just finished a new novel entitled CLEAR/DARK that is ready for publication. He has also written a new musical called The Freedom Machine with composer Shane Alexander. He has rewritten and revised the libretti for several musical theatre projects.  And he has adapted and directed numerous novels and plays for the stage.  His body of writing has all been produced.

Education

Mr. Carpenter received his BFA cum laude from Boston University School of Fine Arts / Theatre and his MA in Nineteenth Century British Drama from New York University. As an educator, he has taught and directed projects for the Juilliard School, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of the Arts, Marymount Manhattan, ACT’s Professional Development Training Program and SUNY Purchase.
